Soup Kitchen Service Day – March 25, 2017
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen.
We are primarily funded by donations and greatly aided by volunteers-who are always needed!
We serve lunch Tuesday through Sunday and breakfast and lunch on weekends to Houston’s homeless and hungry no questions asked. This averages out to be some 9,000 meals monthly (or 95,000 meals per year). Volunteers who wish to help with breakfast on weekends are requested to arrive at 6am in order to prepare the meal that is normally served at 7:30am. If you are interested in helping with the lunchtime meal we need you to arrive by 10am in order to be prepared to serve by 11am. Parking is normally available in the lot across the street or curb-side on the street in front of our building.
We have a number of volunteer opportunities including:
- Providing food and other necessary supplies.
- Assisting our cooks with meal preparation.
- Working on the “serving line”. (Actually placing the food on the trays).
- Serving meals and drinks in the dining room.
- Host/server/escort for guests.
- Bussing tables and trays. (Clearing away empty trays from the tables).
- Dish Washing.
- Distributing care packages and other donated goods when available.
- Cleaning up after meals.
- Helping to empty trash.
- Interacting and ministering with guests. (Our goal is to not only feed the body, but to feed the soul as well.)
We welcome volunteers of all ages. However, children under the age of twelve (12) must have a parent or school chaperon. All volunteers under the age of eighteen (18) must have written parental consent (unless part of a school or organization who has already obtained the necessary consent.)
All individuals must be over the age of fifteen (15) to be in the kitchen.
There must one (1) adult to every five (5) children under the age of 13.
Groups cannot be larger than fifteen (15) persons in size.
Heads must be covered with a hairnet, cap, scarf, etc. because we are a food service facility and must follow state and city health codes. It helps us keep operating costs down if you can bring your own.
Shorts must be worn in modesty.
Covered shoes must be worn at all times. No open-toe shoes.
Please contact Ron Graham, Loaves and Fishes Manager, to confirm dates and times. Even if you think that you have registered or signed up online or have spoken with someone else in the organization, please confirm with Ron as he can answer almost any other questions that you may have. His contact information can be found below.
We greatly appreciate the work of all of our volunteers, and we look forward to having you join us on our mission of mercy to feed Houston’s homeless and hungry here at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen. Thank you!
